Description:  Extremely scarce candid fifties photo signed in Japanese characters.  Tanaka (1909-1977) is known for her legendary collaboration with great director Kenji Mizoguchi, having given internationally acclaimed performances in his masterpieces The Life of Oharu (1952), Ugetsu (1953), and Sansho the Bailiff (1954).  She also starred in Yasujiro Ozu's Dragnet Girl (1933), Hiroshi Shimizu's Ornamental Hairpin (1941), Ozu's Equinox Flower (1958), and many other classics.  Her films as one of Japan's first female directors include Love Letter (1953), The Eternal Breasts (1955), and The Wandering Princess (1960).  (Vintage original photograph; true vintage autograph
