Description: Stunningly rare letter on the New York Leader letterhead signed by the writer and actress (1836-1874), a daringly unconventional figure of nineteenth-century America. Dubbed "the Queen of Bohemia," Clare was part of a group of freethinkers and wits that gathered at the fabled Pfaff's beer cellar in Manhattan; other regulars included Walt Whitman, playwright John Brougham, actor Edwin Booth, and pianist-composer Louis Gottschalk, with whom Clare bore a child out of wedlock. She wrote for the New York Leader, the Atlas. the Saturday Press, and other prominent journals of the period. Her early and tragic death at age thirty-nine occurred after she was bitten by a rabid dog. (Vintage item dated 1862)
