Subject: Lou Andreas-Salome
Size: 4x6
Description: Envelope dated 1926; all of the writing is in her hand and has her name and address on the reverse (her name is written as Lou Andreas, her married name). Andreas-Salome (1861-1937), the celebrated literary femme fatale and prolific author, was the muse of Friedrich Nietzsche and Rainer Maria Rilke. She knew Richard Wagner, Leo Tolstoy, and August Strindberg, and she was one of the few women admitted to the inner circle of Sigmund Freud's friends and followers. The character of Lulu in Frank Wedekin's plays and the Alban Berg opera was inspired by her. In over thirty years of collecting, this is the only signature of Andreas-Salome we have seen. (Vintage original item and signature)
