Tooker is best known for his unsettling images of alienation, oppressive conformity, and urban dread, as exemplified by such works as Dance (1946), The Subway (1950), Highway (1953), Government Bureau (1956), The Waiting Room (1959), and the haunting Landscape with Figures (1966).
